Restaurant of the Month: 10 Greek Street.
10 Greek St describes itself as “a bustling, neighbourhood restaurant in the heart of Soho”. Now, we’ve all heard those words before, haven’t we? So many places try to sound authentic and end up feeling like a parody. But, dear reader, I can assure you that 10 Greek St genuinely lives up to the hype.
Nestled right in the thick of Greek St’s hustle and bustle, 10 Greek St could easily be overlooked with its modest and unpretentious exterior. Step inside, though, and you’re greeted by an intimate ground-floor dining room with low lighting and minimalist decor. Don’t let the simplicity fool you; the culinary delights here are nothing short of extraordinary. The seasonal menu, a love letter to Modern European cuisine, has something for everyone. And for those who fancy a special tipple, there’s a 'little black book of rare wines' to peruse. It’s the perfect blend of low-key luxury and genuine authenticity.
We kicked things off with some juicy, plump green olives and a glass of bubbles – the perfect way to ease into the evening. Among the small plates, the Middle Eastern Coriander and Chilli bread with labneh was a standout, offering a delightful spicy kick. From the starters, the Calcots (a type of scallion) with romesco sauce and ewe’s curd were a tantalising prelude. The fried prawns with fennel, chilli, and olives were a fascinating mix of imaginative flavours, and we were thrilled we opted for six instead of three.
Moving on to the larger plates, the Gressingham Duck with lentils, smoked pancetta, celeriac, chicory, and mustard was the undisputed star. Recommended by the enthusiastic staff, it was a stunning symphony of flavours, with the duck cooked to utter perfection. This notoriously tricky bird was executed flawlessly, with a moreish richness and earthiness that left us craving more.
Hot on its heels was the Cod, succulent and delicately seasoned, with perfectly crisped skin. Cod can often fade into the background, but here, paired with hispi cabbage, lardo, monk's beard, and aioli, it was the star of the show, supported by a stellar cast. And let’s not forget the fried potatoes – outrageously moreish, piled high, gleaming, piping hot, crunchy, and utterly irresistible.
We rounded off this culinary adventure with an unapologetically thick wedge of Chocolate Cremeux, salted caramel, and amaretti pudding, topped with a delicious dollop of creme fraiche. It was an utterly delectable end to a memorable meal. So, if you’re looking for a spot that combines low-key luxury with unspoiled authenticity, 10 Greek St is your go-to. It’s not just another restaurant relying too hard; it's the real deal.
